An initiative that started in Cumberland County has now officially gone statewide. Gov. Chris Christie has signed into law a bill that would assist people in need of shelter during severe weather events. The bill — sponsored by 1st District Democrats Sen. Jeff Van Drew, and Assemblymen Bruce Land and Bob Andrzejczak — directs county offices of emergency management throughout the state to coordinate emergency shelter and services for the homeless during Code Blue alerts. A Code Blue alert will be issued if temperatures reach 25 degrees Fahrenheit or lower without precipitation, or if there is precipitation and the temperatures drop to 32 degrees or lower.
